अंतर्राष्ट्रीय रंगमंच दिवस की स्थापना १९६१ में नेशनल थियेट्रिकल इंस्टीट्यूट द्वारा
की गई थी। तब से यह प्रति वर्ष २७ मार्च को
विश्वभर में फैले नेशनल थियेट्रिकल इंस्टीट्यूट के विभिन्न केंद्रों में तो मनाया
ही जाता है, रंगमंच
से संबंधित अनेक संस्थाओं और समूहों द्वारा भी इस दिन को विशेष दिवस के रूप में
आयोजित किया जाता है। इस दिवस का एक महत्वपूर्ण आयोजन अंतर्राष्ट्रीय रंगमंच संदेश है, जो
विश्व के किसी जाने माने रंगकर्मी द्वारा रंगमंच तथा शांति की संस्कृति विषय पर
उसके विचारों को व्यक्त करता है। १९६२ में पहला अंतर्राष्ट्रीय रंगमंच संदेश
फ्रांस की जीन काक्टे ने दिया था। वर्ष २००२ में यह संदेश भारत के प्रसिद्ध
रंगकर्मी गिरीश कर्नाड द्वारा दिया गया था।

विचार निष्कपट हो, स्पष्ट हो, संवेदना व गरिमा से परिपूर्ण हो | आप तंगहाली, सेंसरशिप, ग़रीबी और
अंधेरों को पराजित करें – जो आप
में बहुत से लोग निश्चित रूप से करना चाहेंगे | आप
प्रतिभा संपन्न व दृढ़ निश्चयी हों और हमें
अपनी पूरी जटिलता के साथ धड़कते मानव हृदय के बारे बताएं - आपमें वो विनम्रता और

World Theatre Day (WTD) was initiated in 1961 by the International
Theatre Institute (ITI). It is celebrated annually on the 27th March by ITI
Centres and the international theatre community. Various national and
international theatre events are organized to mark this occasion. One of the
most important of these is the circulation of the World Theatre Day
International Message through which at the invitation of ITI, a figure of world
stature shares his or her reflections on the theme of Theatre and a Culture of
Peace. The first World Theatre Day International Message was written by Jean
Cocteau (France) in 1962. It was first in Helsinki, and then in Vienna at the
9th World Congress of the ITI in June 1961 that President Arvi Kivimaa proposed
on behalf of the Finnish Centre of the International Theatre Institute that a
World Theatre Day be instituted. The proposal, backed by the Scandinavian
centres, was carried with acclamation.
Message of the 50th anniversary of World Theatre Day
I'm honored to have been asked by the International
Theatre Institute ITI at UNESCO to give this greeting commemorating the
50th anniversary of World Theatre Day. I will address my brief remarks to
my fellow theatre workers, peers and comrades.
May your work be compelling and original. May it be profound, touching,
contemplative, and unique. May it help us to reflect on the question of what it
means to be human, and may that reflection be blessed with heart, sincerity,
candor, and grace. May you overcome adversity, censorship, poverty and
nihilism, as many of you will most certainly be obliged to do. May you be
blessed with the talent and rigor to teach us about the beating of the human
heart in all its complexity, and the humility and curiosity to make it your
life's work. And may the best of you - for it will only be the best of you, and
even then only in the rarest and briefest moments - succeed in framing that
most basic of questions, "how do we live?" Godspeed.
